PM raises question of shift in Armenia policy
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey could establish political relations with neighboring Armenia but in a sign that his remarks may not bring about an immediate shift in Turkish policy, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül said there was no plan to open the border gate with Armenia, closed for more than a decade.
“A political relationship can be established on the one hand, while studies (on allegations of an Armenian genocide) continue on the other. There is no Chinese wall between Turkey and Armenia,” Erdoğan was quoted as saying in an interview with daily Milliyet.
Asked to comment on the prime minister's remarks, Gül announced there was no plan to open the border gate and said: “What the prime minister emphasized is that Turkey is good intentioned, supports stability in its region and is open to developing its relations with its neighbors. But such things cannot be one-sided.”
