Zurich civil servants receive 1 franc bonuses
ZURICH - The Associated Press
Civil servants in the Swiss canton (state) of Zurich can spend that extra franc (dollar) this year on Christmas gifts. Thanks to a computer glitch at the state-owned Zuercher Kantonalbank, the canton's more than 40,000 employees received a bonus of 1 Swiss franc (77 U.S. cents; $0.65) earlier this month, bank officials said. The bank was apparently testing out a new salary payment system using the nominal figure of 1 franc, said spokesman Roman Oberholzer. But "a couple of things went wrong" and the civil servants received the amount officially listed as a "salary payment," Oberholzer said. The bank, however, decided against demanding repayment because the cost involved would be too high, he said, adding that the bank would "write off" the surprise payments.
