Oil drilling in Black Sea

Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) Chairman Osman Saim Dinç said yesterday that drilling in the Black Sea region is one of many projects now under way across Turkey to explore for oil reserves. The exploration projects, he said, have attracted partners such as Toreador, BP, Chevron-Texaco and Anarko.
Gaziantep to provide therapy for stray dogs

The municipality of Gaziantep is accepting bids to remove the city's 1,000 stray dogs from the streets. The project, for which bidding will begin on Dec. 19, attempts to round up, care for and administer the necessary rehabilitation and therapy to the strays picked up. The Gaziantep Municipal Wild and Domesticated Animals' Directorate, organizing the project, has made one condition that the rehabilitation take place at the Street Dog Rehabilitation Center.
Şener calls for improvement in wine industry

State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdüllatif Şener, at a meeting yesterday organized by the Wine Producers Association and the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodities Exchanges (TOBB), said that while the Ottoman Empire produced 240 million liters of wine every year for Western Europe, Turkey now produces approximately 90 million liters. “We are at a very low level, our quality is low, we keep our wine production below that of our national drink, rakı, in terms of quality and production,” said Şener, adding that regulations and taxes must be changed to improve the production of Turkish wine.
New laboratory to improve agriculture in Elazığ

Elazığ Agriculture Chamber head Necmettin Karabulut said that while the lack of soil analyses have hindered an effective plan for crops in the area, the founding of a new laboratory will give the agriculture of eastern Anatolia a new advantage. Karabulut said the laboratory would start operations in 2006.
EU agricultural, animal husbandry seminar

Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Haşim Öğüt announced yesterday that his ministry would hold a meeting to introduce the new laws and standards required by European Union law to farmers across the country. The two-day seminar will cover such topics as animal health and animal welfare as well as human health.
