CEO argues against beer tax hike:
In a statement on Friday Tuborg-Carlsberg CEO Barry Marshall slammed a recent hike in special consumption tax on alcohol, suggesting that the tax on beer was extremely unfair and unmeasured compared to those in European Union countries.
Marshall, quoted by the Anatolia news agency, complained that the special consumption tax on beer has been increased four times in the past two years.
"Turkey collects 3.5 times more tax from beer than the average EU country," said Marshall, adding that the hikes were hurting the company and that the pledges made were broken.
He noted that the tax hikes introduced since 2003 clashed with the government's objective of attracting foreign investment and fighting unemployment.
