KKTC, UN agree on mine-clearing
ANK - Turkish Daily News
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) has reached agreement with the United Nations on clearing land mines from the buffer zone separating them from rival Greek Cyprus, Turkey's Anatolia news agency said yesterday.
The United Nations has policed the heavily mined corridor dividing Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for more than three decades. Anatolia quoted KKTC President Mehmet Ali Talat as saying that the mine-clearing operation would be funded by the European Union. The EU has already allocated 2.5 million euros ($3 million) for the task but will increase the amount later, Talat said.
He said detailed talks would soon take place on how and where the clearing operation would start. The agency provided no further details.
