Many Greek citizens are looking to move to Turkey due to the dire economic situation back home, Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew has said, according to daily Milliyet.

According to the Orthodox spiritual leader, both Greeks who left the country in the past, as well as those with familial roots in the country, are seeking to go east to Turkey, the daily reported yesterday.

“Although Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip Erdoğan] invites [the Greeks of Istanbul origin], it is not easy for them to return. But I wish they would return. In Athens, there is a federation for those who are of Istanbul origin. This federation demands the return of their citizenship from the Turkish government,” Bartholomew said.

Turkish citizenship could be granted to them in order to encourage their migration to Turkey, he said, but added that the move would not be enough on its own because those who have departed possess no land or real estate in Turkey.

“[Their properties] were either sold or occupied. Their children do not speak Turkish. They study at foreign schools in Athens, Thessaloniki, or other parts of Europe. They need to find a job and have some guarantee for future,” the patriarch said.

Bartholomew also emphasized the significance of the Fener Greek Patriarchate. “It is a 17-century-old institution, the oldest establishment in the Balkans and the region. So, the future of this institution also concerns Turkey,” Bartholomew said.
Bartholomew also referred to the events in Sept. 6-7, 1955, during which many minorities of Turkey, including the Greeks, had to leave Turkey as a result of pogroms against them, reducing Turkey’s Greek population from 120,000 to just a few thousand.

The patriarch also touched on a recent parliamentary question about the reopening of Hagia Sophia as a place for Muslim worship.

“We want [Hagia Sophia] to remain a museum. It served as a Christian church for nearly a millennium.

If it is to be opened for prayers, it should be a Christian church again, since it was established to serve as a church, not as a mosque,” he said.

I don't mind if our Neighbors want to come live/work here .. especially if they once had roots here, on the other hand, if they are as hostile, biased and ignorant as some Greek commenters here I really rather have them stay in Greece. Special schools could be set up for their children. As far as land ownership goes, how about land that was occupied, sold and confiscated from Turks by Greeks? E.G 80-90% of the Expropriated lands from Turks who used to own 84% of the real estate in W-Thrace etc?

M B : What is blocking you to have a dual citizenship? I am a dual citizen of Turkey and the US.

Look at the Turkish independence war: You will see not a single Greek, Armenian, Jew or any other Ottoman subjects of non-Turkish origins. That tell you a lot about how hostile they are against Turks.

Anyone who calls himself a Turk is a Turk. Neither Kurds, Armenians or Greeks have such a straightforward defintion of a nationality. This is an opportunity to erase the truly shameful act of the 55 pogroms on our Republic, With all due respect, I also make a distinction between Greek and Rum, which were an essential part of our civilization.

As a Greek origin Turkish, I wouldn't mind having dual nationality. Therefore maybe I can also help my Greek brothers with my contributions.

@Nageyec, Greek Muslims are more than happy here. If they weren't, they would leave. In addition, Pomaks in Thrace were more than glad to see the recent changes in Imams election issue. They have been thanking Greek government since that day. Google it. Eventually a mosque will be built in Athens also. Nobody refused to do so.

This is a strange situation. It's not only Istanbul. My grandfather's town is Canakale, and we have many friends in other places from Imvros to Izmir, Antalya and Adana. We know how they live.. What will happen if people return there? Will they be respected? Will they be allowed to have schools, churches, speak their language? Turkey does not want another massive minority when they cannot handle the existent.

These issues can be best be dealt by first allowing the Greek Muslims to have their freedom of worship restored. Up until now the Muslims in Athens are still asking a place of worship in their own country. Travesty of justice democracy! of course EU version.
