Galatasaray wins trophy with lastsecond shot

ISTANBUL
Galatasaray women’s basketball team beat Fenerbahçe to win the Spor Toto Turkish Cup on Jan. 6, thanks to a last-second shot by Sancho Lyttle.

The Spanish star sank a dramatic shot in the last second of the game to make the score 74-72 and secure the trophy for Galatasaray.

The shot came during the last play of the game, seconds after Cappie Pondexter hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 72-72.

“We had an incredible game,” she said. “I am happy that I made the basket that won the game.”
The win gave Galatasaray its fourth consecutive Turkish Cup trophy, with three of them coming against arch rival Fenerbahçe in the finals.

Lyttle led her team with 19 points while Belgian center Ann Wauters added 14 and American guard Lindsay Whalen had 13 for the winners.

Pondexter’s 19 points were not enough for Fenerbahçe for the win while Serbian center Ivana Matovic had 16 points.

The win took Galatasaray’s Turkish Cup tally to 10 trophies, passing Fenerbahçe’s haul of nine cup victories.

Galatasaray’s cup win came just a week after losing 83-67 to Fenerbahçe in the Turkish league.
Titleholder Fenerbahçe still leads the league with a 12-0 winning record, with two wins ahead of Galatasaray.
