Funeral held for fallen police killed in clashes

A military ceremony was held yesterday for a special forces policeman killed in an accidental artillery shooting incident May 21 during clashes in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır amid attempts to retrieve the kidnapped Justice and Development Party (AKP) provincial head.

Akın Bayram’s body had been sent to the Black Sea province of Ordu to be buried in his hometown.
Security forces have been conducting operations in nearby areas since the provincial head was kidnapped. Clashes erupted when security forces made contact with suspected militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) after militants had reportedly kidnapped the AKP district chairman for the southeastern province of Diyarbakır’s Kulp district, Veysel Çelik, on May 13.

Meanwhile, negligence claims were reported for the killings of three officers in a PKK attacked them in Hatay’s Dörtyol. According to a report in daily Hürriyet, three soldiers were sent for a search and rescue operation of an armored vehicle in the field on the outskirts of Mount Amanos. The general negligence of the operation as well as its lack of planned left the soldiers trapped by members of the PKK. The illegal order is in question for the botched operation, the daily reported.
