Police have apprehended four people in the Mediterranean province of Adana that were attempting to sell a leather Torah that is almost two millennia old, private broadcaster NTV has reported.

Police seized the holy book while also detaining the four suspects, who were identified as T.N., Ş.C., Y.Ş. and S.C.D.

"We bought it from an antique store and brought it to a geography teacher to ask what was written on it," one of the suspects said.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and sent the book for inspection.
