Heavy rain and flooding killed nine people in the Black Sea province of Samsun, daily Hürriyet reported today.

Six children were among those killed by the flood, according to initial reports.

The ground floor of several apartments, offices and a hospital were flooded after Mert River in Samsun's Canik neighborhood spilled over its banks due to heavy rain.

Some bridges on the river were closed due to the risk they might collapse while the road between Samsun and Ordu provinces was closed to traffic.

Search and rescue operations have reportedly been started and officials have made announcements to warn occupants living near the river.
