Demonstrators who held banners targeting Armenians during last year’s commemoration of the Khojaly massacre, in which hundreds of Azerbaijanis were killed by Armenian military forces, have been sentenced to five months in prison by an Istanbul court, daily Habertürk reported March 2.

The banners which read “You are all Armenians, you are all bastards,” as well as signs that mocked the slain Turkish journalist of Armenian origin Hrant Dink, had caused indignation both inside and outside Turkey. Prosecutions were initiated against the 10 organizers who held the banners for incitement to hatred.

The indicted said their intention was not to insult, but rather to draw attention to the Khojaly massacre and protest the French Parliament. At the time, France was considering a bill to make it a crime to deny that the events of 1915 amounted to a genocide against the Armenian people.

The court sentenced six of the 10 suspects to six months in prison, which was reduced to five for good behavior during the trial. They were also fined 3,000 Turkish Liras.

@ Ender, not every Armenian in Turkey is illegal brother, we also have Armenian Turkish citizens.

Zung O, I fully support any of our citizens to be treated equally no matter what race, it's Turks that are treated less then at the moment, Terrorist supporters roam the streets with flags etc, screaming all kinds of offenses yet are protected by the police while Turks are being arrested. Armenian diasporans have a 1000 times more offensive slogans and pan karts. This will only create more racism, for example movements like the Atsizcilar are growing in numbers because of such things

#Zung O Are you forgetting that neither of them are Turkish citizen?...They are just illegal worker...Why do they need to be treated equal to Turkish citizen?Am I equal to armenian citizen or european citizen?Am I free to live and work in the EU or Armenia likewise EU nationals or Armenian nationals?. Analysts suggest an estimated 40,000 to 100,000 Armenian expatriates live in Turkey. Turkey reserves the right to expel them under the international rules.

@turk uzan... are you forgetting that there are almost 100 000 ethnic Armenians living in Turkey who need to be treated equal to the majority. If you want democracy and fairness in Turkey, you need to protect each and every citizen. besides, what do the turkish armenians have anything to do with khojaly?

#JRC JRC "....If someone had raised banner criticising Turkey they wouldn't have got a few months, they'd have got years..." How do you reach such a conclusion? Are you criminal judge or just trolling?

@ JRC, I think you confuse AKP with Turkey.. today it's a shame to be a Turk in Turkey

The real reason behind verdict: Those protesters also don't like the ruling party.

Turk Uzan, if someone had raised banner criticising Turkey they wouldn't have got a few months, they'd have got years.....as has been the case recently. This sentence is symbolic, and the accused will be unlikely to serve even one day.

Armenians are a minority in Turkey. So it is normal to protect them , if you are a democracy.
