The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has fined Turkey over 60,000 euros in the case of several politicians who were all tried and convicted by Turkish courts for speaking Kurdish during election rallies.

The court decided unanimously that Turkey had violated freedom of expression by convicting the Kurdish politicians – Şükran Aydın, Ayşe Gökkan, Ayhan Erkmen, Orhan Miroğlu and Mesut Bektaş – who had been fined and even sentenced to prison under a now-amended law that banned speaking any language other than Turkish during election campaigns.

States have the right to regulate the language of the election process, the court said, but “a blanket ban on the use of unofficial languages coupled with criminal sanctions” violated freedom of expression.

The ban, according to the European Court of Human Rights, “directly affected the applicants and had thus amounted to an interference with their freedom of expression.”

The court fined Turkey 10,000 euros for each of the applicants and another 10,000 euros for court expenses.

Aydın and Gökhan had been convicted for speaking Kurdish during election rallies in 2002, while Bektaş was convicted in 2004, and Miroğlu and Erkmen in 2007.

They lodged a complaint with the ECHR in 2008.

JOHN They still have a right to speak any language that they want! Some people appear before Congress and speak other languages, that does not lessen English as our native tongue. Bush spoke Spanish on television. JFK's wife spoke French and German when touring Europe, but that didn't change English. Didn't Ozal speak some Kurdish in public? AGNES IS SPOT ON!

And finally- the reason it takes ECHR to come to their conclusions is they have such a backlog of Turkish cases only preceeded by Russia. FACT. John - the EU fines are cheap when you consider how much compensation should have been given over many years and time to come. They will pay, don't worry or their EU bid will be thrown in the basket. You are now going to say we don't need the EU. Yes its a mess, but if you want democracy, freedom of expression and justice you there is only this route.

John, Mara is correct.& PKK aside. If you spend years in prison for a crime you haven't committed you then have to go to the European court to get justice. How does that work? If you were wrongly convicted, missed years of your life, your kids growing up etc, who should compensate. In Turkey it is just the normtto accept this as normal and one of the biggest reasons it is of huge importance the country continues the quest to join EU.Otherwise we are all prey of injustice forever.

John - you are verging on right. But they were not in parliament, they were campaigning. They were convicted with a law that is now amended. So it is all wrong. The laws change and the courts don't know how to enforce and correct. Have you ever been in court here? I would rather have my teeth removed. The official languge of Turkey will always be. But if I want to speak Welch thats ok in UK .I live in Wales and can choose with dignity. The more you oppress the tougher they get.

@mara,the language of Turkey is Turkish and not the kurdish language!!These people are all supporters of the terrorist gang pkk and they just want to stir up trouble for Turkey. I hope the goverment does not pay this fine! We are Not a multilingual country and Turkish is our language and we expect every citizen to speak it,and it is a must for members of parliment. How would you feel if in congress they would speak spanish!!

This court consists of judges from PKK harboring states. So don't expect some neutrality from them. They are one of the faces of double-talking Europe.

The fines are not proportionate! They should have been in millions.

The fines should have been per year of each prison term.
