Homosexuality, a “sexual preference,” is contrary to the culture of Islam, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said March 21, referring to the case of nine-year-old Yunus who was adopted as a baby by a lesbian couple in the Netherlands.

“We should hand over Yunus to secure hands. If we say ‘a six-month child cannot make such a decision so it is the judiciary who decides,’ then this could lead to us to a big mistake,” Erdoğan told reporters in a joint press conference with his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte.

Nine-year-old Turkish boy Yunus, who is a Dutch citizen, was adopted by the Hague-based couple when he was a baby, but his biological mother told Dutch public broadcaster NOS that she wanted him back.

Erdoğan also called on non-governmental organizations (NGO) to get involved in the issue to solve the problem.

$15 billion target

For his part, Rutte said the issue was the Netherlands’ internal problem and that he was against the issue being discussed at ministerial level.

Turkey has embarked on a campaign to retrieve children of Turkish immigrant families living in Europe who are fostered by foreigners. It says they should instead be placed in homes where their cultural identity can be preserved.

On economy, Erdoğan said that they wished to raise Turkish-Dutch trade volume to $15 billion by 2015. “Our trade volume with the Netherlands is $7 billion. We would like to raise it to $15 billion by 2015,” Erdoğan said.

DUTCHTURK This child is first Dutch, and REDTAIL made the crucial point that children of Turkish origin should not be treated any differently than other Dutch children. I would think that raising any kind of religious child be it Christian or Muslim would be better than a child that knows no religion, or would you say that would be better?

@Red Tail, if you think that a child of 4 is old enough to know the difference between Islam and Christianity, then you lost contact with reality. How wrong would it be for a Muslim family to bring a child of a Christian family to the mosque and let her wear a headscarf? Yes indeed that wrong is it also for a Christian "missionary" family to bring children of a Muslim family to the church and let the child pray for Jesus. @Leah, i wouldn't have said if if it didn't happen, it was on the Dutch TV

Agnes Smith: Today's high divorce rate is a separate, but connected issue. Just as devastating for the children. This is particularly so because the courts (in the UK) are always biased in favour of the mother whatever she may have done and however "innocent" the father may be.

Murat. In the US blacks and whites are equally americans, so I can not see your point in the comparison. In Holland all kids are Dutch and should be treated as Dutch. To single out certain kids as "You are not Dutch, but Turkish and a Muslim" I do not think send the right signals to neither the kid nor the society in large. I do not think it is good for the image of Turkey and Turks that RTE goes to Holland and demands that some Dutch of Turkish origin should be treated differently.

Red Tail: Parents have right to choose religion of their children. I have a vegetarian friend, he raises his children as vegetarian. The state or others respect that.

In USA, a black child would be first placed in a black family. In Australia, government has aoplogized for taking aboriginal children from their families and placing them with families with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds for decades. Same sex marriage is hardly a universally accepted norm, it is at best an anamoly. Erdogan certainly has a point, though absurd for him to take it on. Except, there seems to be shortage of Turkish foster families.

Extremely wise word REDTAIL on all of your posts. I know many children who are raised by one parent, and BRITS question never comes up. These are their natural children. I also know same sex couples who raise wonderful children, because they wanted a child so much, and have the ability to give the child a great life, free from so many of the prejudices that are rampant throughout the World. RTE does not have a dog in this hunt and should stick to international business.

DutchTurk. You are not BORN Muslim or Christian. In most countries it is a matter of personal choise. There are no Muslim children or Christian children, only children. It is wrong to distinguish between children based on religion.

@DutchTurk: yeah right, because they are so many Christian couples forcing the poor muslim children who are in their care to go to church, this horrible gavur place... I will never understand the obsession of some muslim people with the "missionaries" that supposedly try to convert all virtuous muslims in the world.

Brit - slightly outdated thoughts, when so many kids are asking each other which parent they live with. Obviously Mr RTE is not wondering about the future mental state of a kid at the age of 9 being hurtled back to a foreign country, a language he does not know and to be institutionalised What about if Jane and Janet both want to take Yunus to the football game? How will Yunus every recover from this media controversy which has been escalated by such a caring leader of the faith. Political pawn
