An amateur football match staged what could be the first vuvuzela-triggered crowd trouble in Turkey on Sunday.
The match in Gebze, a district of the northwestern city of Kocaeli, between amateur teams Hisarcıklıspor and Girbay was interrupted after a fight broke out between the two teams’ fans, Anatolia news agency reported.
The fight was triggered by two fans blowing their vuvuzelas during the 75th minute of the game, to the irritation of another group of supporters who were disturbed by the noise.
The vuvuzela, the plastic horn and unofficial “instrument” of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has become the subject of heated discussions. Some say its droning sound causes headaches while others believe it is the most cheerful and entertaining way to embrace the African culture hosting the World Cup tournament.
The two groups could not agree, however, and the discussion turned into a fight. Eventually, the fight grew to such a scale that the players on the pitch got involved. Finally, the police arrived and dispersed the crowd with pepper spray.
The game continued after the fight was stopped, the agency said.
