Sabanci Foundation's 'Turkey's Changemakers' tells the story of Dr. Mustafa Sarı, who has been working to preserve the fish living in Lake Van.
The fourth episode of the program on Oct. 25 tells the story of Dr. Mustafa Sarı from the eastern province of Van. For 17 years, Dr. Sarı has been working to preserve the fish living in Lake Van, which has a circumference of 400 kilometers, and developing methods to prevent illegal fishing, which has almost led to the extinction of a certain species of fish.
Thanks to his efforts, illegal fishing has dropped from 12 tons per year to only 2 tons per year over the past 13 years, while also contributing to the growth of the fishing industry – thus sustaining a livelihood for hundreds of families that make a living from Lake Van's resources.
