Famous arabesque singer Sibel Can and her husband Hakan Ural are to be charged by the State Security Court (DGM) for a "crime of threatening personal freedom" through an organized crime group, known by public as the "Karagumruk Gang," the Anatolia news agency reported.

Can could face between 4.5 and 12 years imprisonment if found guilty.

Apart from Sibel Can and her husband, gang members Nuri Ergin, Vedat Ergin, Abbas Ozcan, Murat Ersoy, Serkan Erdemli, ™mer Kukut and Yasin Al, who are currently in custody, will also appear at the same trial in the Istanbul DGM.

The charges relate to the beating up and the taking of nude photographs of male model Can Kuzu by members of the Karagumruk gang. It is alleged that Kuzu had attempted to blackmail Can over a video of the singer having sex with former Mr. Turkey Karahan Cantay and that Can then enlisted the help of the gang to deal with Kuzu.

The story broke last month after Can and her husband were questioned by the Istanbul DGM about the case. They were later released without charge and the two deny any wrongdoing.

    Gang in court

Members of the gang itself are to be tried on a variety of charges relating to the incident.

According a press release from the Istanbul Prosecutors Office, Nuri Ergin and Vedat Ergin will be charged with forming an organization to commit crimes, kidnapping, blackmail, injuring with a gun, threatening personal freedom, and firing a weapon in an illegal manner. Prosecutors are to ask the DGM to imprison the Ergin's for the rest of their lives or for a period of between 37 and 69.5 years.

Abbas Ozcan, and Murat Ersoy, Serkan Erdemli, Omer Kukut, and Yasin Al, other members of the gang, will also be tried on the same charges but prosecutors will only ask for jail terms of between 16 and 35 years.
