Restoration of the Neron Lighthouse has started with the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and the department of archaeology at Akdeniz University.
The Neron Lighthouse in the ancient city of Patara in the Kaş district of the Mediterranean province Antalya is being restored. Restoration will be completed in June.
Restoration of the Neron Lighthouse, unearthed in excavations in 2004, has started with the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the department of archaeology at Akdeniz University. Project Manager Architect İlhan Şahin said the lighthouse was unearthed after 6,000 trucks of sand were removed from the area in 2005. He also said the 4.5-meter-wide cylindrical lighthouse was standing on a rock.
Şahin said the restoration project would cost 590,000 Turkish Liras. During the restoration, old stones and tablets from the tower’s platform were being removed and numbered. Also, broken or worn out stones were being repaired.
“The lighthouse at Patara was constructed in 64 or 65 AD. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the world. All phases of the lighthouse’s restoration will be recorded and digitally documented,” Şahin said.
