Mirsad Turkcan, the first Turk drafted for the prestigious National Basketball Association (NBA), is returning to his former club, Efes Pilsen, news reports said on Sunday.

The mass-circulation Hurriyet daily reported Mirsad is expected to return to Istanbul today.

Mirsad joined the Houston Rockets this season, but became a pawn of fate, as the lockout imposed by the NBA owners has shut down the sport.

Unable to agree on how to divide some $2 billion in annual revenues, the NBA has been closed since July 1 as the owners and players fight over the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement.

The first three months of the 1998-99 season have been scrapped, and the league hopes to play a 45- to 50-game schedule if the work stoppage ever gets settled. In the meantime, the players and fans wait.

But Mirsad is tired of waiting and so is coming back to Efes, the team that made him famous. Reports said Mirsad will remain with the Istanbul side until the end of the 1998-99 season.

Things have changed for the worse since Mirsad left Efes. The team that used to sweep aside opponents with enthralling arrogance, has itself become a whipping boy, both in domestic action and in European competition. It is hoped that the return of Mirsad will help change the tide in favor of Efes Pilsen, now stuck in a mysterious slump.

News reports said that Efes will allow Mirsad to return to the Houston Rockets next season, and in a generous gesture, has also decided to reduce Mirsad's transfer fee from $1 million to $500,000.
