Istanbul -Berlin at the turn of the century. The first luxury grand hotels were being built and the company which was to gain worldwide fame under the name 'Kempinski' was founded. One hundred percent of the shares in the original company were acquired by M. Kempinski & Co. GmbH, Berlin and some of the most remarkable hotels in Germany, including the Hotel Kempinski on the Kurfurstendamm, were taken over.

The Kempinski Restaurant in the 'Haus Vaterland,' built in 1928 at the Potsdamer Platz, was for decades one of the most popular addresses in Berlin. Today, 'Kempi' is the affectionate expression by the Berliners for their hotel on the Kurfurstendamm - Kempinski Hotel Bristol Berlin.

The second "Grand" hotel, which was acquired in 1957, was the Kempinski Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg. The Atlantic, aptly known as the 'white castle,' was already an institution in the hanseatic city. In 1970, Kempinski Hotels obtained 50 percent of the shares in the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Munich with Lufthansa as the second shareholder This was the beginning of a partnership which continues to this day. The fourth German hotel was the Kempinski Hotel Gravenbruch Frankfurt, acquired by the company in 1977.

Five years later, Lufthansa obtained shares in Kempinski, enabling the traditional German hotel group to expand its operation worldwide. For this purpose Kempinski, Lufthansa and Rolaco S.A. founded Kempinski Hotels S.A., headquartered in Geneva. By 1987, the Grand Kempinski Dallas was the first Kempinski hotel abroad and at the same time, Kempinski introduced its worldwide reservation system.

The expansion of Kempinski met the high demand for further luxury properties in the key cities of the world. In the following years the Hotel Libertador Kempinski Buenos Aires (1988), Leela Kempinski Bombay, Hotel Furama Kempinski Hong Kong (1990), Ciragan Palace Hotel Kempinski Istanbul and the Mansion Kempinski Bangkok (1991) joined the renowned group.

Every year since then Kempinski has opened at least one hotel. The same activity continued after Dusit Sindhorn Co. Ltd. acquired the majority of the Kempinski shares at the end of 1994. The acquisition led to a new international oriented expansion strategy for the group.

The Kempinski Hotel Furstenhof Leipzig opened in March 1996. Just like the Taschenbergpalais in Dresden and the Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, the newest jewel in the Kempinski family is a historical building, which was carefully restored in accordance with stringent conditions of the protection of historical monuments.

Dusit Hotels & Resorts and Kempinski Hotels today have more than 31 hotels in 14 countries. With new openings planned in Asia and Europe, the two will be represented by 38 hotels in 16 countries.Ciragan Palace Kempinski achieves new success
