Two young men in Ceylanpınar, a town in the southeastern city of Şanlıurfa, have produced thousands of chicks by turning a refrigerator into an incubator.
Mehmet Salman, 31, and Ömer Taştan, 30, who live near the Syria-Turkey border, managed to create an incubator from an old refrigerator by adding some parts to it.
Salman said he was always interested in animals. "I am a primary school graduate and I am trying to earn my living by dressmaking. The invention of this incubator stemmed from our interest in animals. I decided to start this project after a long period of research. I started the work after I decided to turn an old refrigerator in my house into an incubator.”
Salman and his friend Taştan initially put a heater inside the refrigerator. They obtained the heater from an old electric stove. They placed a fan next to the heater in order to provide air distribution.
“We also placed a thermostat inside the refrigerator to maintain the 37 degree heat that is required for incubation. We put a water pan just above the heater in order to produce moisture,” Salman said. “We managed to produce thousands of chicks and two ostriches with this machine, which I can admit look quite primitive. But I can build a better product, I just do not have adequate resources at the moment."
