Following Galatasaray's magnificent victory in the UEFA Cup, Sports Minister Fikret Unlu proposed that the team be awarded the highest prize that the state could possibly give, reported the Anatolia news agency.

Unlu told reporters after the match that Galatasaray would be rewarded by the state for its achievement. Unlu said that the first article on the agenda in the first Ministers' Council meeting would be the amount of prize-money to be given to Galatasaray. Other ministers and deputies who were in Copenhagen for the match have also supported Unlu's proposal, saying that Galatasaray had represented Turkey very well and made every citizen of Turkey proud.

The 15 kilogram silver UEFA Cup will be a permanent fixture of the Galatasaray Museum if the team can win it three times. Galatasaray will be given a copy of it, four-fifths the size of the original and worth SFR 3,000 ($1,800), after it gives the real cup back at the end of a year.

Also, Istanbul's Bahcelievler district municipality decided that a copy of the cup would be erected in front of the Bahcelievler Culture Center. Ankara Mayor Melih Gokcek, who joined celebrations in Kizilay, said in a speech to the public that a new district named "Galatasaray-2000" would be established in Ankara and added that the biggest boulevard of the district would be named "Fatih Terim Boulevard," while the other streets would be given the names of players on the team.
