Forum Istanbul, the largest retail project in Europe, opened its doors to a curious crowd of hundreds of people on Wednesday.
Developed by Multi Turkmall, Forum Istanbul is located in Bayrampaşa, near the center of Istanbul’s European side.
Speaking during the complex’s opening ceremony, Multi Turkmall CEO Levent Eyüboğlu said that the center was built with an investment of 750 million euros. Including the stores’ investments, the total figure for the complex adds up to 1 billion euros, he added.
The shopping center expects to receive 25 million visitors a year. The targeted annual turnover of Forum Istanbul is 500 million euros. The shopping center stands on an area of 495,000 square meters with 175,000 square meters of leased retail area, including a 29,500-square-meter IKEA and the largest Real hypermarket in Turkey.
Forum Istanbul will employ 6,000 people, said Eyüpoğlu. “We had never made such an effort as we did to build this shopping complex,” he said. “I doubt we can ever do anything better and more beautiful than Forum Istanbul.”
Forum Istanbul is a very suitable investment for the city, said Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay, who also was present at the opening ceremony. The ministry will continue to give full support to “forum” projects that are being constructed all over Turkey, he added.
Bayrampaşa Mayor Hüseyin Bürge said he had always dreamed of his district being remembered for something other than the Bayrampaşa jail. “Finally, with this project, my dream has become real,” he said.
