The 2010 tournament in Turkey has gone down in history as the most successful World Basketball Championship, according to FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann.

The 2010 tournament in Turkey has gone down in history as the most successful World Basketball Championship, according to FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann.

Speaking at a press conference Sunday prior to the final between Turkey and the United States, Baumann praised the host country for a successful organization.

“We are on the point of closing the most successful FIBA World Championship ever,” he said, underlining that interest in the game was rising.

“The latest TV figures show that an expected 1 billion people in nearly 200 countries watched the games. Overall TV ratings have exceeded both those of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan and 2009 EuroBasket in Poland.

“Our reach online has also set a new record – 30 million visitors have been to the FIBA Turkey 2010 website,” he said.

“Turkey made history with not only the organization they made but with the performance on the court,” Baumann said.

“It has been the most competitive tournament ever. The Turkey vs. Serbia match was an incredible show of spirit and performance,” the FIBA head said.

“We have already begun planning for the World Championship in 2014 in Spain,” Baumann said. “Spain 2014 will take the FIBA World Championship to an even higher level.”
