Several of the year’s most talked-about films are part of the lineup for the 10th AFM International Independent Film Festival’s !f Inspired competition, which is coming next month to Istanbul.

The !f Inspired competition carries a $15,000 award and aims to make Istanbul a global center for young and innovative cinema while gathering key cinema professionals for a selection of nine films from Turkey and around the world. The international jury headed by director Hüseyin Karabey will choose a “most inspired director” based on the criteria of bold storytelling and innovative techniques.

Some of the films showing include “Our Day Will Come,” the first feature film of well-known music video director Romain Gavras, the son of famous director Costa Gavras; Michaelangelo Frammartino’s “Le Quattro Volte,” which has been awarded at many international festivals; and Hungarian director Agnes Kocsis’s “Adrienne Pal,” which features a nurse who goes on a journey to find her childhood friend.

The event will also feature “Nuummioq,” Greenland’s first Oscar-nominated film, which tells the story of Malik, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness, while acclaimed Belgian director Koen Mortier follows his controversial debut film “Ex Drummer,” with this year’s competition entry “22nd of May,” about the aftermath of an explosion at a shopping mall.

Also in competition are “R,” about a Danish prison, and “We are What We Are,” a Mexican film which redefines the genre of horror.

Turkey’s nominee is “Atlıkarınca” (Merry Go Round), the second feature film from young director İlksen Başarır.

The festival will take place between Feb. 17-27 in Istanbul and March 2-6 in Ankara. Festival tickets will be sold on www.mybilet.com. Early bird sales are Feb. 5-7 for Istanbul and Feb. 25-27 for Ankara.

Further information about the festival is available at www.ifistanbul.com.
