Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was named one of the top 25 most influential leaders by TIME magazine on Thursday.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was named one of the top 25 most influential leaders by TIME magazine on Thursday.

Erdoğan was ranked 17th among the magazine's top 100 influential people. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva topped the list, and U.S. President Barack Obama was listed as fourth.

"Turkey's prime minister is a survivor," the magazine wrote. "As the head of NATO's only Muslim member nation and a vibrant secular democracy, Erdoğan has the potential to reshape a restive region."

"The 2010 TIME 100" lists 100 people chosen by the magazine as influential in four categories: leaders, heroes, artists and thinkers. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was tapped as most influential hero, Lady Gaga as most influential artist and Zaha Hadid as most influential thinker.
