Istanbul police raided 137 stores in the Grand Bazaar on Saturday to chase down counterfeit goods sold in the city’s historic shopping center.

Istanbul police raided 137 stores in the Grand Bazaar on Saturday to chase down counterfeit goods sold in the city’s historic shopping center.

Some 90 people were detained during the operation, including three alleged leaders and four public workers, according to police data gathered by the Doğan News Agency, or DHA.

An earlier operation based on tip offs saying that counterfeit versions of goods of some international brands were being sold in the bazaar was spoiled as police found no illegal goods at the stores, the report said. After the failure, the police started wire-tapping particular public workers at the courthouses and some storeowners.

On Saturday morning police first raided the houses of some storeowners and detained 90 people, then went to the stores at the Grand Bazaar.

Sacks of counterfeit goods, particularly handbags, watches and scarves, were confiscated.

Four courthouse employees were detained on claims that they had informed the storeowners before the previous operation, the police sources said.
