Sean Connery’s 007 was to be the face of iMac’s new campaign in 1998, but the testy Scotsman put paid to the plan with a tersely worded letter to Apple founder Steve Jobs, a new report has revealed.
It was 1998, when today’s computer kingdom was anxious about launching their new product: the iMac. As the holiday season approached, sales were slowing and Jobs was looking for a new way to increase sales. Because he was a big fan of James Bond, he came with the idea of using an image of Connery as 007 as a mockup version for the ad.
Jobs and his lawyers sent a proof of the ad, hoping to receive the Scotsman’s approval for using his likeness to to sell iMacs. But on Dec. 11 of that year, Connery sent Jobs back a sharp-tongued letter in which he stated his opinion about the ad clearly, saying “I could think of no quicker way to destroy my career than to appear in one of your crass adverts.”
Connery has appeared in past ads for Louis Vuitton and Japanese scotch.
The 1998 letter was finally exposed to the public this week.
