Dogan Media Group’s daily Radikal, a publication familiar to readers of the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review, is preparing for drastic changes both in format and content with its 15th Anniversary edition to hit newsstands Sunday.
Radikal merged with economy daily Referans a few months back and is now taking a new direction. For starters, Radikal will be published in tabloid format, which is a bold move for Turkey as it is a rare format for dailies.
Eyüp Can, the new editor-in-chief for Radikal, said the biggest change they will bring to Radikal would be an effort to stay out of the polarization in the media and the biased reporting it causes. “Our primary mission is journalism,” said Can on private news channel NTVMSNBC. “Unfortunately, [political] missions have undermined journalism in Turkey.”
Can said Turkey has changed a lot in the past 15 years and they intend to “resurrect” the newspaper for the libertarian left. “The DNA of Radikal is the liberal left, now it will be the libertarian left” he said.
