An annual peace prize awarded by a leading Australian army members and veterans' association has been presented to a Turk for the first time.

An annual peace prize awarded by a leading Australian army members and veterans' association has been presented to a Turk for the first time.

This year’s Anzac Peace Prize, which has been awarded annually by the Returned & Servicemen and Women’s League of Australia, or RSL, since 1979, was presented to Turkish-born Vecihi Başarın.

Anzac refers to Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops who fought at Gallipoli in the World War I.

In a written statement released after being awarded the prize, Başarın said he was presented with the RSL accolade because of his contribution to Turkish-Australian relations.

Başarın, who wrote six books on the Gallipoli campaign with spouse Hatice, said he was honored to receive such an award, adding that he would continue to work to strengthen the friendship between Turkey and Australia.

The Anzac Peace Prize's aim is to recognize any outstanding effort by an Australian citizen who has promoted the concept of international understanding and who, in so doing, has made a contribution to world peace. Any Australian citizen or anyone who has made an application to become an Australian citizen, of either sex and of any age, is eligible to receive the award.

Anzac and Turkish armed forces fought on the Gallipoli Peninsula during World War I in reportedly some of the most gruesome fighting of the modern era. Ceremonies are held annually to commemorate the loss of life from both sides.

The RSL is a support organization for individuals who have served or are serving in the Australian Defense Force.

The league's main objective is to ensure that programs are in place for the well-being, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-service defense force members and their dependants and promote government and community awareness of the need for a secure, stable and progressive Australia.
