'Amisos treasure' open to the public

The treasure, Turkey's second most important find, was discovered in 1995 in Ebusuud Caddesi in the Cedit suburb of Samsun, when the Samsun Ilkadim municipality was carrying out road works in that area.

    Ankara - The Amisos treasure, found when the Samsun municipality was working on the construction of a city road, will be placed on public exhibition in the Samsun museum, reported the Anatolia news agency.

    The treasure, Turkey's second most important find, was discovered in 1995 in Ebusuud Caddesi in the Cedit suburb of Samsun, when the Samsun Ilkadim municipality was carrying out road works in that area.

    The tomb belonging to a high-ranking official and his family dating from the Pontus Kingdom was discovered to contain a pure gold king's crown, 15 gold buttons, four gold bracelets with human and animal figures on it, 18 broken gold bracelets, a gold barette, two gold earrings, 10 big gold necklaces, a gold ring with a gem, 24 necklaces, 424 beads, a glass bowl, four earthenware, three kerosene lamps and an earthenware plate.

    The director of the Samsun museum, Mustafa Akkaya, noted that the treasure could have belonged to the sixth Pontus king, Mitridat, and his family. The collection discovered in Samsun is the biggest find in Turkey after the treasure of Karun.
