7EDİ, the last of seven demonstrations prepared for Istanbul as part of the “7 Regions to 7 Hills” project developed by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Theater and the Performing Arts Directorate with the Shaman Dance Theater, will open for audiences next week.
The show, which was inspired by spaces and themes of Istanbul such as the Bosporus, the Grand Bazaar, seagulls, the Maiden’s Tower, Topkapı Palace, Selimiye and Galata and represents scenes from different periods of the city, will be on stage on Nov. 3 to 6 at the Harbiye Muhsin Ertugrul Stage.
7EDİ, the last demonstration of the directorate’s training and entertainment project “From 7 Regions to 7 Hills,” aims to provide communication between different dance and music cultures and disciplines that live and are kept alive in various parts of Istanbul and to fuse people of different cultures with the language of dance and music.
The project bears the signature of renowned choreographers such as Patrick De Bana, Ersin Aycan, Çiğdem Tezcür, Uğur Seyrek, Yıldız Çankaya and Selçuk Borak. Murat Uygun is the project director and it was coordinated by Kerem Kuraner. The music for the project was prepared by Oğuzhan Balcı. In the project, 35 dancers will perform. Sibel Sürel will take part as a guest dancer. The show has already received invitations from international festivals.
The rehearsals of the show commenced in Istanbul in March and continued at Shaman Dance Group's studio in Antalya after May. The performance, in which techniques from different dance disciplines are tested, has been designed as two scenes, each 45 minutes long.
[HH] About ‘From 7 Regions to 7 Hills’ project
“From 7 Regions to 7 Hills” started in November 2009 with workshops for amateur dancers and dance candidates from different cultures and age groups, training sessions provided in fields like dance, rhythm and music, and demonstrations held at the end of these training sessions.
Many groups have been involved in the project, including the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music Turkish Folk Dance Department, IU Eurasia Institute, Kadıköy Public Education Center, 7 Tepe School for the Hearing Impaired, the Bahçelievler, Güngören and Büyükçekmece municipalities, the Foundation of Lausanne Treaty Emigrants, Şemeş Karmiel Dance Team, Maral Dance Group and Armelit Costume.
Six different performances were created from these studies. In the shows, prepared on the basis of local-national-universal transitivity, traditional dances in Istanbul were blended with different dance disciplines to create new formats.
The Shaman Dance Group and Semes Karmiel Dance Team will perform the show together. In the show, as a theme depicting the forced migration of Sephardic Jews from Spain to Istanbul, Sephardic songs and dances and examples of the ethnic dances of Anatolians living in Istanbul will be staged. The beauty of living together in Istanbul is described by the show’s language of dance.
