'Controlled' explosion causes alarm near military base in southeast Turkey
ŞANLIURFA - Doğan News AgencyA "controlled" explosion has occured at a military base in a southeastern Turkish province, causing alarm.
Ambulances and firefighters were dispached to the area after the explosion at the 20th Armored Brigate Headquarters in Şanlıurfa, a province on Turkey's border with Syria, Doğan News Agency reported on May 7.
Military sources speaking to Hürriyet said an anti-tank mine was destroyed in a "planned and controlled way." Voicing surprise over the brief public panic in the area, sources stressed that local officials had been informed beforehand.
Windows of houses and shops in the neighborhood were shattered, eyewitnesses said.
