Acknowledging that Syria’s shooting down of a Turkish jet in the eastern Mediterranean was an “unforgettable and unforgivable assault,” main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has accused the government of weakening Turkey’s deterrence because of its “foreign policy that depends on bluff.”

“Let’s ask ourselves. Could you imagine that one of our countries would be able to down one of our jets? Nobody could think of that,” Kılıçdaroğlu said at his party’s group meeting, adding that foreign policy mistakes of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) had made Turkey’s deterrence questionable.

Courage of sending a diplomatic note

Kılıçdaroğlu recalled that that U.S. troops had raided the Turkish military’s liaison office in Suleimaniya on July 4, 2003, placing a “hood” on 11 Turkish special forces soldiers, but the government had not “shown the courage of sending a diplomatic note to the U.S.”

“The government claims that Turkey has become a major power. No major power turns a blind eye to the killing of nine of its citizens, it’s intolerable. They said that it was a cause of war at the beginning, and then ministers held secret talks in the hotel rooms of Brussels to make a new start. Such bluffs dealt a big blow to Turkey’s deterrence,” he said.

Mavi Marmara

Kılıçdaroğlu was referring to the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident in 2010, in which nine Turkish citizens were killed by Israeli commandos in international waters, after which Israel did not apologize.
“Foreign policy cannot depend on bluff. Let’s compare the two speeches of [Prime Minister Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan that he delivered after Israel’s killing of our nine citizens and Syria’s downing of our jet. They are nearly the same speeches, full of epic rhetoric. Erdoğan has become an object of derision in Middle Eastern newspapers. This is unacceptable for us,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

The CHP leader once again said they would lend their support to the government to use diplomatic routes to resolve the crisis.

Exactly AGNES Someone needs to tell him he can draw more flies with honey rather than vinegar. The AKP maybe very popular inside the country, but they make Turkey a laughingstock on the international stage on a daily basis.

Blue - spot on -watching that space. But do you think we might be giving away too many clues. He is in checkmate in the game. It all depends on PM ego now - attack or defend and both are a losing game. Sorry he pussyfooted from the beginning he could have saved countless lives. He works in weird and wonderful ways depending on how he wakes up in a morning. The generals he threw away might be better serving him right now. What a hole he has dug himself.

Dear Murat: It is Turkish military that claims guardianship is fully responsible for the security of Turkey. You and Kilicdaroglu are taking a cheap shot at Erdogan. If you love Turkey, Government needs your support now. Please read the comment of Deniz Can.

@ Deniz Sorry, but the one who is using war speech is your esteemed PM! The CHP may not be a political genius, but the AKP is set to destroy any thought of humanity in the name of an extremely biased humanity! Falsehood at its best!

Kilicdaroglu is spot on! Erdogan threatens, postures & bullies at home where he has power! But he threatened how Turkey would be actively patrolling the waters of the East Med? nothing! How Turkey would not bend, and would increase patrols over oil and gas exploration around cyprus? Nothing! Has "demanded" a reason for israels invasion of airspace over north cyprus? Nothing! If anyone causes embarrassment to Turkey on the world stage, it is surely the PM, who talks loud and delivers - Nothing!

Don't worry, NATO is planning to get some Turkish troops killed at the Turkish/Syrian border in such a way that it can be blamed on Assad, then, if it is done well enough, the Pentagon will finally get its wish and Turkey will declare war on Syria. The Pentagon will then be able to kill two birds with one stone.

You are spot on sir, we are becoming a laughing stock of the world. All our leaders capable of is bluff, talk and hot air and more of the same over and over again. No sovereign power would tolerate what has been happening. You would not see British or French invoking article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty then find out that it does not really apply in this situation. They would bilaterally hit back twice as hard. Are we becoming a nation of cowards? What happened to the proud Turkishness?

What Mr. Kilicdaroglu is doing is pure opportunism, provocation, populism and easy politics. Using the language of war in this very critical and sensitive time shouldn't be the policy of a social democratic party. If a party can’t drive a differentiated and creative politics, it will apply easy politics. After seeing the performance of Kilicdaroglu I am convinced that there is still a very long way for CHP to be taken as a party of power.

Now he has a good point. Erdogan's government has miserably failed to protect our borders, ships, planes, our lives and our dignity from foreign attacks and aggressors. He is still thinking of concentrating more power in his hands while taking no responsibility. Does not work that way.
