The Republican People’s Party (CHP) has filed a parliamentary question regarding an attack on daily Hürriyet’s headquarters in Istanbul by a crowd of stone-throwing Justice and Development Party (AKP) supporters angered by its reporting on a comment by the Turkish president.

Eren Erdem, a CHP Istanbul deputy and a member of the CHP’s commission on the media, issued a parliamentary question to Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu about the pro-government protesters’ attack on the Hürriyet building, asking why no one had been detained, even though “pennants were set on fire, the doors and windows of the building were broken and threatening slogans were chanted.”

“Is it true that the attackers used the police megaphone to organize the protest? Would the police’s attitude be the same if a protest attempt had been staged on pro-government media outlets?” asked Erdem.

Erdem also asked whether the daily’s building would receive any protection.

Around 150 pro-government protesters attacked Hürriyet’s Istanbul headquarters early Sept. 7, with sticks and stones, causing damage at the building and lightly injuring security personnel. The protesters, who had chanted pro-government slogans, retreated after police units arrived at the scene.
