Turkey's main opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said his party would back Turkish President Abdullah Gül if "the only two candidates" were Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Gül.

"If there are only two candidates, and only those two names come forth, then why not?" Kılıçdaroğlu said during a televised interview on private broadcaster Star TV.

Kılıçdaroğlu also added that his Republican People's Party (CHP) would like to nominate someone whose political identity hadn't been put forward and someone the Turkish people would be willing to accept as president.

SPARKS While Mr Gul might look more like a statesman than anyone else in Turkey, read his personal bio. He still has the backward mentality that is rampant in the AKP. Don't be fooled. I am not optimistic there is anyone with a forward thinking vision of what Turkey could be. There is such a great potential if someone was brave enough to step forward and make Turkey a full secular democracy.

A brilliant gambit by leader Kurnazoglu! Machiavelli would be impressed, too bad the CHP still doesn't have a 21st century plan of its own.

Mr. Gül really is a statesman, although he is from the AKP. Mr. Kemal has set the tone for the forthcoming elections.
