Cartoonist Balcıoğlu laid to rest

Journalist and cartoonist Semih Balcıoğlu will be laid to rest today at Zİncirlikuyu Cemetery after noon prayers at the Zincirlikuyu Mosque.

Balcıoğlu, who was the head of the honorary board of the Turkish Journalists' Association (TGC), died from heart failure on Thursday.

He was born in 1928 in Istanbul and graduated from the State Fine Arts Academy. His first cartoon was published in 1943 in the Akbaba humor magazine. He later worked at the Karikatür, Amcabey, Akşam, Dünya, Hürriyet and Tercüman dailies.

Among the many awards he received were the Silver Pigion (Skopje), Gold Medal (Pescara), Golden Palm Tree, Abdi İpekçi Peace and Brotherhood Award and the TÜYAP Fair Group Honor Award.

He has held 60 exhibitions of his work, seven of which were overseas. He was selected as one of the top 106 cartoonists in the world by the Gabrovo House of Humor and Satire. Balcıoğlu was one of the founders of the Turkish Cartoonists' Association and was the head of Turkish Journalists Union between 1973 and 1979.
