Traffic on Istanbul's E-5 highway came to a halt today after a metrobus managed to exit its lane and slammed into a car, causing it to flip over.

The accident occurred near Istanbul's central Mecidiyeköy neighborhood, which serves as a main junction terminal for the city's mass transit lines.

The metrobus jumped over the railing that separates the special bus lanes from the highway and drove into oncoming traffic. Numerous cars got out of the bus' way before the bus hit an automobile, causing it to flip over.

One person who was injured in the accident was taken to hospital, while the road was closed to traffic for almost an hour before the automobile and the metrobus were removed from the scene of the accident.

The closure of the E-5 highway, one of the two main highways of Istanbul, added to the traffic chaos that had already gripped the city after three-month-long maintenance work on the Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) Bridge on the TEM highway began yesterday.
