Abortion is a practice that “should be banned,” the head of Parliament’s Human Rights Commission has said, adding fire to a raging debate that was sparked by the Turkish prime minister’s recent remarks against abortion and Caesarian births.

“Abortion is a crime against humanity. It means depriving unborn babies of the right to life. It’s a delusion to consider that a baby’s life begins only after a certain period of pregnancy. Our society is pulling away from this delusion gradually,” Ayhan Sefer Üstün told Anatolia news agency yesterday.
Any intervention against life in the womb should be banned without regard for the woman’s trimester, Üstün said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said May 25 that he considered abortion to be “murder” while also speaking out against Caesarean births. In Turkey, abortion is legal during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, and Erdoğan’s remarks have created a huge debate over the issue.

According to Üstün, abortion is a subject related to many areas such as the penal code, human rights and traditions. Üstün indicated that an abortion ban could be brought to the Turkish Parliament’s agenda in the upcoming days.

On the other hand, a deputy from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Sezgin Tanrıkulu, who is also a member of the Human Rights Commission, described the abortion debate as a result of the government’s “agenda engineering.”

“An issue which concerns only individuals has become an issue for politics. This is the Justice and Development Party’s attempt to change Turkey’s agenda,” Tanrıkulu told the Hürriyet Daily News yesterday on the phone.

Tanrıkulu also condemned Üstün’s comments on abortion as “unfortunate.”

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) also slammed the government over the abortion debate.
“The oppression of women has come to the point of deciding how many children women would give birth to and how they would do it. Pushing women to have at least three children and taking away abortion rights from women is a way of locking women in their houses,” a press release made public yesterday read.

The right to have an abortion is an inseparable part of women’s control over their own bodies; women do not belong to the state, they belong to themselves, the TTB’s announcement said.

The TTB’s Istanbul branch also joined the abortion debate, saying in a written statement that a ban would lead to “secret abortion centers” and put the health of women further at risk while also noting that abortion was not considered or used as a birth control method.

Once again the current regime shows just how backward thinking they truly are.

Every time I hear a new statement from this regime, it undermines its assertion that it is a secular government. This government keeps trying to probe deeper and deeper into the private lives of its citizens. It is sticking its nose into areas where it has not business. Is it going to start forcing women to wear hijabs soon, or banning women from work? the writing is starting to appear clearly on the wall.

so now they are planning to ban abortion even in the first 10 weeks? sometimes I am so glad I am a man and a gay man at that:) It is as stephen says if women dies because of this ban, who would be the murderer then? what of thousands of children who will be born with horrible birth defects, who will be responsible for their suffering? turkey is in for a down syndrome boom if this law is passed

Gone in 60 seconds That was how long my opinion of Sahin took to go from there is hope for you and trying to protect women, to nothing, zero, zip, nada, sifir or 0. Take your pick. I'm so happy that the families minister has the family so firmly in mind...especially the health and mental well being of the mother. Of course the next one who comes to her because she has been raped will be the first one won't it.

Abortion is not fun in any way, but the advantages of having a free abortion law outweigh the negative aspects by far. Countries who ban abortions still have just as many abortions or even more than countries that allow it. 45000 women are estimated to die every year because of badly executed abortions. Does Ayhan Üstün want to add Turkish womens' lives to that figure?

@Faruk Beisser, the policy of the Catholic Church is that all contraception is banned. Erdogan is articulating something quite different, which is an anti-abortion message (in fact, he is openly saying that pills and condoms should be used). Nevertheless, it would be good to adopt a less emotive, more considered approach. He has the right to air his views, but when this shades into making state policy so easily then something is wrong.

I have a lot of Turkish friends, and they dont like using sheaths (rubbers). They say it isnt their "national characteristics." So, here is the dilemma. If you dont wanna have a baby (or more than one), your partner must take some tablets (pills), and if your partner has a kind of allergy to tablets, eventually you must wear sheaths. For this reason, fellows, try to get used to such contraceptives or you are gonna be a murderer (even a mass murderer). I am sorry but that is the law.
