A ban on the sale of cats, dogs and rabbits has come into effect at pet shops in Istanbul’s Kadıköy Municipality.

The sale of cats, dogs and rabbits has been prohibited as of April 1 within the boundaries of Kadıköy, due to the poor conditions and cages the animals are usually kept in.

The majority of pet shops are found to be complying with the new regulation according to audits conducted in 78 pet shops.

Kadıköy Mayor Selami Öztürk said there would be no retreat from the ban. Özturk also added that pet shops failing to comply with the ban would be fined as a first measure, and if they continued to violate the ban their sales license would be confiscated.
