    Istanbul - Turkish Daily News

Eyup Asik, the former member of Parliament and minister of state in the Motherland Party (ANAP) coalition government who, at the end of a short court case, was cleared of charges he aided the mob, defended himself at a press conference in Istanbul yesterday. There were a number of criticisms of the court ruling that found that Asik's telephone conversations with mafia godfather Alaattin Cakici did not constitute a crime.

The behind-the-scenes of the Asik-Cakici phone conversation, which revealed the depth of the mafia-state connection and caused the fall of the 55th government headed by Mesut Yilmaz, had been made public by Cakici's friends. They said that during Cakici's stay in the United States he had received information from Turkey that there would be a police operation against him and that he should change his place of residence. Asik was alleged to be the person who supplied Cakici with this information.

Asik was tried in the Istanbul State Security Court (DGM). At the end of Wednesday's hearing the court pronounced that the evidence for conviction was insufficient.

While the public is now debating the fairness of the decision, Cakici organized a press conference to defend himself. At the conference held in ANAP's Istanbul headquarters, Asik said, "My party chairman and I will take a more active position against the gangs from now on."

Asik continued: "I had confidence in justice, and in myself and my own deeds. I took responsibility for everything that I did. The gangs, the mafia and their collaborators were afraid. Let them be afraid... Mesut Yilmaz, Eyup Asik and ANAP will from now on pursue them with greater single-mindedness."

Asik claimed that ANAP had combatted terrorism, the gangs and religious fanaticism, and that the previous government scored important successes in the fight against the gangs.
