The Director of the Cincinnati Art Museum Aaron Betsky will discuss architecture and interiors at SALT Galata on Saturday, in a talk titled “Architecture Beyond Buildings.”

Architecture is not building. It is everything that is about buildings: how they are made, how they appear, and what they mean. These days, however, buildings are more often than not the tomb of architecture. Buildings are defined by codes: life safety codes, building codes, computer codes, financial codes, and codes of behavior. Aaron Betsky will argue that more interesting and important architecture is to be found beyond buildings, within them, and through them.

Aaron Betsky is the Director of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio. In 2008, he directed the 11th International Architecture Biennale. Between 2001 and 2006, he was Director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute and, before that, Curator of Architecture, Design, and Digital Projects at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Trained as an architect, he writes, lectures, and blogs on architecture, design, and art. He is the author of a dozen books, and his collected essays, “At Home in Sprawl,” was published by RMIT Press in December 2011. Saturday’s talk will be in English, and is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
