Anti-violence law to exclude single women

ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
A new draft bill aimed at protecting women from violence will only apply those who are formally engaged, married or divorced after a clause regarding “those involved in a close relationship” was removed from the resolution.

The decision to exclude women subjected to violence by partners with whom they have no legal bonds of marriage was issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, according to reports.
The draft bill was presented to the Cabinet in recent weeks and then sent back to the Family and Social Policies Ministry. The motion will subsequently be presented for Parliament’s approval and finally go into effect if it passes.

The draft law brings about a number of measures to combat violence toward women, such as tracking perpetrators by means of electronic handcuffs, as well as providing a “panic necklace” for female victims of violence, daily Sabah reported. Perpetrators deemed to be likely to engage in such acts e will also be penalized by being removed from the couples’ joint homes, which will then be allocated to the victims.
