Ancient coins found in Turkmenistan

MARY, Turkmenistan
A hoard of ancient silver coins has been found during construction work in the Serhetabat district of Turkmenistan’s Mary province, turkmenistan.ru website has reported.

Preliminary analysis by the specialists of the State Historical and Cultural Preserve “Ancient Merv” suggests that the coins of different denominations numbering 191 pieces date back to the 15th century.

The area where the unique discovery was made is located at the intersection of the ancient caravan routes leading to Herat, Merv and Sarahs. These cities were part of an extensive system of Great Silk Road that played a crucial role in the development of economic, trade and cultural relations between East and West. According to historical data, the city of Herat was the capital of Khorasan in that period, and it was ruled by the descendants of the famous conqueror, Tamerlane.

Following the appropriate restoration work to ensure safekeeping of the ancient findings, the coins will be handed to the State Museum of the National Cultural Centre of Turkmenistan for storage and study.
