Programming classes to be introduced at Turkish elementary schools

A proposal will soon be presented to the Education Ministry for programming classes to be entered into the elementary school curriculum, Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Işık has said.

“Soon we will send our official proposal to the Education Ministry to put programming classes into the [curriculum] of elementary schools. Our children should learn programming at the age of elementary classes,” said Işık on April 3, during a speech at the opening of the Süleyman Şah Elementary School in Turkey’s northwestern province of Kocaeli.

He said the government was giving utmost importance to teaching programming to children, as it was “significant for Turkey’s future.”

“If we want to grasp sustainable development in science and technology then we need to increase our education quality even more,” Işık said, adding that Turkey needed to be one of the world’s top countries in science and technology.

Işık said “investing in human resources” was the most important thing a country could do to reach its future goals, giving the examples of Germany and Japan after World War II, when they were emerging from the world’s most devastating war and had no natural resources but chose to invest in human resources, later becoming two of the world’s strongest economies.
