Police officer commits suicide after being suspended in post-coup attempt probe

A police officer has committed suicide in the Black Sea province of Bayburt after being suspended over alleged links to the movement of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, believed to be behind Turkey’s failed July 15 coup attempt. 

The 32-year-old police officer, identified only by the initials E.O., shot himself in the head with his own weapon late on Oct. 5 in the city center of Bayburt.

He was taken to Bayburt State Hospital but succumbed to his wounds.

His body was later taken to the morgue at the Trabzon Forensic Institution following initial examinations. 
The case is the latest in a series of suicides committed by suspended police officers in Turkey since the coup attempt.

Previously, 26-year-old police officer Adem Tıraş also killed himself with his own gun in the park in the southern province of Mersin on Oct. 4.

More than 12,000 police officers were suspended on Oct. 4 over suspected links to the Gulen movement, referred to by the government and prosecutors as the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ).
