The council of Aleppo University has announced the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate in international relations that the university awarded to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2009.

Aleppo University Rector Dr. Khodr al-Orfali said during the council’s meeting on July 15 that the move “came in response to the growing demands of the Syrian universities’ councils and the academic, student and public circles inside and outside Syria,” state-run news agency SANA reported.

“Withdrawing the doctorate sends a vocal message of solidarity with the Turkish people who oppose Erdoğan’s hostile policies,” al-Orfali said.

“It is the Turkish people who deserve this degree. … The Turkish people who continue to express desire to cement the relations of friendship and amity between peoples in the two countries,” the rector said.

Turkey, a vocal critic of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, currently hosts some 500,000 refugees from its neighbor.

THE BANKER Right, it was the evil West that made Turkey move next door to Syria. Now we are being blamed for geographic positions? Really? And the West has spent over a billion dollars in support of the refugees. You can't have it both ways. You can't hate the "West" and then whine that they don't get involved. Building contracts? Doesn't RTE's son in law already have those contracts in his pocket????

Illuminati - doing it's thing again - Tople the government when things are going well, Turkey's PM was voted by it people - people power - you telling me other politicians are better - they are all the same..... We do not want Turkey to turn into Iraq or Eygpt - just look at these countries after they toppled the government - I think people should be talking about the riots in USA - but as usual this will be toned down.

I think it's a load of Rubbish - The West pushed The Turkish Government into Syria - Then it's jumped shipped and has left Turkey to pick up the pieces - Turkish PM didn't do anything that the western powers have done, He sided with the west - Double Standards - if he sided with Assad he would be called a Islamist etc etc heard it all before... Let them keep it Who control the US syria of the US government.

@DutchTurk, Erdogan is largely responsible for there being 500,000 Syrian refuges in Turkey. It is Turkey's policies of arming and supporting foreign mercenaries and fundamentalist fanatics in Syria that has created the refugees in the first place. Erdogan should shelter and feed them at his own expense.
