A ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) mayor in the Central Anatolian province of Niğde was shot dead by a seasonal worker on May 8.

The suspect, a 30-year-old seasonal worker, shot the mayor dead after finding out that his name wasn’t picked in a draw to work for Niğde’s Yeşilgölcük Municipality.

The man first barged into Mayor Hakkı Şengül’s office, and then threw him out of his office. He then fired shots at the mayor before fleeing the scene.

Şengül was rushed to a hospital after receiving multiple gunshots. But he succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

After a couple of hours, the suspect surrendered to gendarmerie forces.

An investigation was opened into the murder.

Niğde Governor Yılmaz Şimşek offered his condolences to Şengül’s family.
