The Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Republican People’s Party (CHP) have agreed on the need for structural economic reforms during lengthy exploratory coalition talks, which are expected to be completed Aug. 5.

“A common understanding on the need for structural reforms has been revealed and expressed. The importance of fiscal and monetary discipline and protecting these through social balances has also been expressed,” Haluk Koç, deputy leader of the CHP, said after an eight-hour meeting with the AKP delegation on July 30.

Koç said the two delegations have also discussed the importance of a comprehensive growth strategy and other economic issues.

Koç also said the delegations will hold two meetings, on Aug. 2 and on Aug. 3, before submitting their report to the chairmen. The former meeting will take place in parliament, he said.
