A militant from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) who was killed Sept. 2 was allegedly responsible for a deadly Aug. 9 land mine attack on a military bus in the Aegean province of İzmir, authorities have said.

The alleged perpetrator of the İzmir attack was reportedly killed after he and a fellow militant became involved in a firefight with security forces at a checkpoint in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa on Sept. 2. The colleague was captured with injuries, but the man in question reportedly died after the explosives he was carrying exploded.

The killed militant was identified as Ahmet Bal, while the injured militant was identified as Yunus Çiçek. Authorities reportedly determined that the two had been responsible for the İzmir attack, which killed two soldiers and injured nine, after comparing their fingerprints with ones taken from the blast scene in the Aegean province.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
