Stray cats are a famous trademark of the streets in Istanbul and elsewhere in Turkey. Walking, you can see longhaired Angora cats and “chalk-white/blue-eyed” Van mixes as well as non-Turkish breeds resembling Abyssinian or Egyptian Mau cats. Most are fed by locals, but some are unlucky enough to get hit by cars or harmed by ill-intentioned people and stronger animals. A Facebook page, “Türkiye’nin Kedileri” (Turkey’s Cats), presents stories of felines adopted from streets and treated in homes. Click through to meet some of them.
